Answers to your questions about hypnobirth, hypnosis and hypnotherapy

What is hypnosis and hypnotherapy?

Hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation with focused attention. Hypnotherapy adds positive suggestions to the client while they are in this relaxed state. The suggestions bypass the logical, rational 'thinking' part of the mind and speak directly to the unconscious part of the mind, the part that deals with the automatic things you do each day. It's easier to change your habitual behaviour this way, than by trying to change by intellectual reasoning alone.

Will I say or do things that I don't want to when I'm hypnotised?

No. Hypnosis is simply a way to let your body be absolutely relaxed, while your mind is calm and focused. You will be completely conscious, and you remain in total control - it isn't like being asleep. You will hear everything that's said in the session.

My birth partner prefers not to come - what are my options?

You're welcome to book one to one birth hypnotherapy sessions. It's a condition of Hypnobirthing® that birth partners attend, so these aren't available. I'm happy to chat with birth partners if they're unsure about the course. Also, have you considered another birth partner? Hospitals can accomodate two birth assistants who can share the responsibility between them according to their skills.

When can I come hypnobirth sessions?

Between 25 and 36 weeks is best to give you time to absorb the information and to practice at home.

I'm 38 weeks already, is it too late?

I could do an intensive Hypnobirthing® course if you're too late to fit four weekly sessions in before your due date. However, it's a bit of a whirlwind course. Instead, I suggest you book birth hypnotherapy sessions which are tailor-made for you, then we can concentrate on the most relevant areas for you to get the most benefit in a short amount of time.

What qualifications do you hold?

I'm a qualified clinical hypnotherapist, recognised by the General Hypnotherapy Standards Council and listed on the General Hypnotherapy Register. I am qualified in the Mongan Method of Hypnobirthing® and listed on their practitioner register too. Let me know if you'd like copies of my qualifications, insurance details or if you'd like a reference. I encourage everyone to be sure of the credentials of their practitioner - whatever their discipline.
